Richard O. "Dick" Campbell

June 16, 1940 ~ June 14, 2021 (age 80)


Richard O. “Dick” Campbell, age 80, of 81 Campbell Road, Benton (Fairmount Springs) died at his home at 8:45 a. m. Monday, June 14, 2021 after an illness.

Born in Sugarloaf Township, Columbia County on June 16, 1940, he was a son of the late Harry M. and Vera (Hartzell) Campbell. His step mother was the late H. Lavenia (Deitrick) Campbell.  He resided in the Benton area all of his life and was a 1958 graduate of Benton High School.

Dick was well known as the operator of the Benton Cider Mill for many years, both at his home and also the Bloomsburg Fair. He also did horseshoeing, ran a saw mill, worked as an iron worker, did logging and also carpentry work.

He enjoyed fishing and playing music on his fiddle, banjo and harmonica, as well as teaching people to play all of them.

Dick served as a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard unit in Berwick for six years. He also was a member of the Fairmount Township Fire Co.

In addition to his parents and step=mother, Dick was preceded in death by a step-brother, Tom Gulliver and a step-son John Blackburn.

Dick is survived by a daughter, Toni, wife of Eric Oppel, Chincoteague Island, Va.; two sons: Harry Campbell, and his wife Jewel, Enola and Michael Campbell, and his wife Deborah, Fairmount Springs; four grandchildren: John Blackburn, Erin Yaple, Jessica Zielecki and Douglas Campbell; seven great-grandchildren: Christopher Yaple, Hayley Yaple, Isla Zielecki, Devin Blackburn, Emily Blackburn, Jacob Blackburn and Tucker Blackburn;  six siblings: Jolene, wife of Arnold Stackhouse, Benton, Edward Campbell, and his wife Nancy, Bloomsburg, Sheila Thompson,  Elaine, wife of Lester Sweet,  Cathy, wife of Barry Beck, Kay Stanton, all of Benton, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later time.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.
