Paul C. "Hap" Schatz

August 10, 1944 ~ December 26, 2020 (age 76)


Paul C. “Hap” Schatz, age 76, of Bloomsburg died at 10:10 p. m. Saturday, December 26, 2020, at Brookdale Senior Living in Bloomsburg where he resided since July, 2019.

Born in Norristown on August 10, 1944, he was a son of the late John E., Sr. and Thelma (Michener) Schatz. He resided in Mt. Pleasant Township since 1976.

Hap was a 1966 graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College with a B. S. degree in Education. He received his M. S. degree in Education from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, in 1968. He was an elementary teacher and later a Guidance Counselor before moving to Columbia County to assist his mother in operating the family farm following his father’s death. He operated a beef, hog and grain farm until 1984.

He was employed as a Congressional Aide to former Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski from 1984 to 2003. Hap then became the Regional Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Region II office in Montoursville where he worked from 2003 until retiring in 2009.

Hap was a member of the Canby Lutheran Church in Millertown and had attended the Benton Christian Church more recently. He was a member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436, the Oriental Lodge 460, F & AM of Orangeville, the Millville Grange and other agricultural groups. He also served on former Governor Rendell’s transition team.

Surviving are his brother, John E. “Jack” Schatz, Jr., and his wife Susan of Trappe; a nephew, John E. Schatz, III and his wife Kim, Round Hill, Va.; a niece, Wendy, wife of Steven Robertson, of Frederick, Md.; a great-nephew, John E. Schatz, IV and a great-niece, Kristen Schatz, both of Round Hill, Va.

Private graveside services will be held in the Lower Skippack Mennonite Cemetery in Skippack Township, Montgomery County.

A public memorial service will be scheduled in spring following the Covid-19 pandemic.
