Verna (Hyduk) Augustine, age 91, formerly of Bloomsburg (Almedia), died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the Emmanuel Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Danville.

Born in Marion Heights on April 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Zushin) Hyduk. She was a 1948 graduate of Kulpmont High School in Kulpmont and a resident of Almedia for 60 years.

Verna was employed for a number of years at the former Baronal Garment Co. in Bloomsburg and later worked for the former Magee Carpet Co., retiring in 1997.

She was a longtime member of St. Columba Catholic Church in Bloomsburg and had been active in the former Catholic Daughters group of the church. She was a volunteer at Maria Joseph Manor in Danville for many years. She also delivered Meals on Wheels in the Bloomsburg area.

Verna enjoyed gardening and caring for her home and was a skilled seamstress who made many dresses for her daughters. She enjoyed traveling, spending summers at the beach in Ocean City, MD, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Miramar, FL. She enjoyed watching Penn State football games and attending home games and tailgating, including the Citrus and Rose Bowl games with her daughter and family.

She was an excellent cook and baker and was especially known for the many delicious Christmas cookies that she made for family and friends. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. “Jack” Augustine, on April 12, 1980 and by six brothers: Michael, George, Joseph, Andrew, John, and Steve.

Surviving are two daughters: Marie, wife of Robert Prego, of Larksville, and Jacqueline, wife of Robert Burch, of Pequea; five grandchildren: Monica, wife of Chad Morrow, of Pinehurst, NC, Bridget Prego, of Bethesda, MD,  Brandon Prego, and his wife Laura, of Orefield, Benjamin Burch, of Washington Boro, David Burch, of Quarryville; four great-grandchildren: Kennedy Morrow, Luca Morrow, Aiden Prego, and Aubrey Prego; a sister-in-law, Rita Olaf, of Danville; several nieces and nephews; and two cousins.

Verna was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Maria Joseph Manor and Emmanuel Nursing Center for their compassionate care she received in her final years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12 noon in St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron St., Bloomsburg, by her pastor, Rev. Richard J. Mowery. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. The family will greet friends at the church from 11-12 noon.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be sent to the activity fund of Emmanuel Nursing Center, 11 Schoolhouse Rd., Danville, PA 17821.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.
