Silas Lee McHenry, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025 at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Though born in Brunswick, Georgia, Silas spent much of his childhood in the Mid-Atlantic regionof the U.S.. He attended high school in Middletown, Delaware before completing his studies at Kaimuki High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Shortly after graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Boiler Man 3rd Class aboard the USS Hugh Purvis DD-709.
After his military service, Silas pursued higher education at the University of Idaho, earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts and later a Master’s in Educational Administration. His love for learning and dedication to teaching helped shape young minds in classrooms across
Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and North Dakota, even serving as a school administrator in both Washington and North Dakota. Following his retirement from education, Silas continued to find purpose and connection through ten years of work at Home Depot in Fargo, ND.
Silas was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Myrtle (Tull) McHenry; his sister, Linda (McHenry) Fleming; and his niece, Dawn Fleming Smith.
He is lovingly remembered by his four children—Silas Lee (Keirstin) McHenry III of North Carolina, Michael (Nicole) McHenry and Benjamin (Carlissa) McHenry, both of North Dakota, and Sarah (Robert) Rowland of Oregon; his former wife and friend, Laurie McHenry; as well as seven grandchildren: Hunter, Riley, Ava, Brady, Evan, Alexander, and Athena; family friend, Ernie Pound; his niece, Denise (Thomas) Fleming Linnenbaugh of Florida; and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 11:30 am, in the Stillwater Christian Church, Stillwater, Pennsylvania with Lead Pastor Chris Mulpas officiating. Internment will follow in the Stillwater Cemetery where military honors will be performed by the U.S. Navy and the combined veterans group.

Silas will be remembered for his steady strength, his service to his country, his love of learning, and his unwavering devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
