Robert E. “Gene” Rothermel, age 95, of Rushtown Road, Danville, died peacefully at the Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg early Friday, March 29, 2024.

Born in Shamokin on Sept. 6, 1928, he was a son of the late Wellington A. and Cora (Fisher) Rothermel.  He resided in Rush Township, Northumberland County most of his life and was a 1946 graduate of Danville High School. He attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg for one year during which he served as quarterback of their football team.

A lifelong entrepreneur, he began his working life in his father’s meat business. At one time, he and his wife owned the Rothermel’s Twin Kiss in Riverside for over twenty years. He also owned and operated a restaurant next to the Danville Post Office for several years and started Rothermel’s Sales & Service on Route 11 selling cars. He last worked at Weis Markets and Giant Markets in the meat room, retiring at the age of 88.

He was a member of the Grove Presbyterian Church in Danville.

Gene was an avid golfer and one of the founders and a life member of Frosty Valley Country Club. He sponsored Jerry McGee on the pro golf tour and one year he came in third at the Master’s Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

He took flying lessons and received his pilot’s license. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed following his grandchildren’s sporting activities.

Gene proudly served his country as a member of the U. S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant. It was there that he met his future wife, the former Mary A. Hutch, and they enjoyed 71 years of marriage before her death on Jan. 28, 2024.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Morris.

Gene is survived by two sons: Robert E. Rothermel, D. O. and his wife Susan of York and Wellington “Skip” Rothermel and his wife Dorothy of Rush Township; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and several nephew’s.

 A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 2-4-p. m. at the Rothermel Family homestead, 999 Rushtown Road, Danville.

The family requests that you kindly omit sending flowers and instead say a prayer in memory of Gene and Mary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1133 Bloom Road, Danville.
