Peter T. Mitchell

August 3, 1934 — April 13, 2018

Peter T. Mitchell

Peter T. Mitchell, age 83, a 46 year resident of Stockholm, N.J. and most recently of Danville , passed away peacefully on April 13, 2018.

Born on August 3, 1934 in Yonkers, N.Y., Peter was a son of the late Lawrence V. and Margaret (Weir) Mitchell. He was a 1952 graduate of Rice High School, Manhattan, N.Y.

In 1958 he met the love of his life, Kathleen Tansey, at a CYO dance. They married in May, 1959 and enjoyed almost 59 years of marriage. His three children arrived shortly thereafter. The singular reflection of his character was his commitment to his family. Peter was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather who was most happy when his family was around him.  Kathy was his best friend. Together they modeled for their children what a loving marriage should be. Until Pete’s dying day, he was most concerned that his wife, children and grandchildren were all ok. Beyond his family, he most enjoyed his dogs, boating (especially at Rockaway Point) and chocolate shakes.

Peter was always a worker, getting his first job as a newspaper delivery boy when he was in Trinity Grammar School. His career included work as a repairman for Bell Telephone Co. (N.Y.), as a Seabee for the U. S. Navy, route salesman for Taystee Bread (N.Y.) and Entenmann’s Bakery (N.J.), and sole proprietor of KalKlean Supply Co. (N.J.) . For many years, Pete worked a second job, most often as a landscaper. Throughout his life, he was happiest tinkering in his garage,  working on his house, lawn and cars.

In addition to his beautiful wife, Peter leaves behind the three children he adored and their spouses: Susan, wife of Willard “Skeeter” Helwig, Catawissa ; Kevin Mitchell, and his wife Peggy, Vernon, N.J.; Ellen, wife of Stephen, Moss, Sussex, N.J.; six grandchildren: Tara Helwig Vining, Joshua Helwig, Quinn Mitchell, Patrick Mitchell, Cassidy Moss and Roman Moss; his sister, Margaret Sharkey; his brother, Lawrence Mitchell, Jr; nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend, Eddie Hoffman, with whom he talked every Sunday morning.

Pete was predeceased by his  parents and his younger brother, Thomas. He missed them dearly and we are sure they were there to greet him when he reached Heaven.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 23, 2018, at 12 noon in the Chapel of Maria Joseph Manor, 875 Montour Blvd., Danville,.  Relatives and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Interment will be in the Northern New Jersey Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Sparta, N.J. at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Nazareth Memory Center for the loving and compassionate care they provided to Pete for his last two years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Nazareth Memory Center, 600 Schoolhouse Road, Danville, PA 17821 or to the American Diabetes Association at 150 Monument Road, Suite 100, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania 19004.
