Michael V. Herbert, Ph.D

Michael V. Herbert, Ph.D, age 89, Bloomsburg, died at 6:25 p. m. Friday, December 1, 2017 at Brookdale  At Bloomsburg Senior Living, where he resided for the past nine years.

Born in Lansford on May 29, 1928, he was a son of the late Metro and Anna (Migal) Herbert. He resided in Bloomsburg since 1963.

He was a graduate of Lansford High School in 1946; University of Maryland in 1953 with a B. S. degree and received his Ph.D.  from Lehigh University in 1960.

Dr. Herbert was a professor of Micro Biology at the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College (now Bloomsburg University) from 1963 until retiring in 1991.  Previously he taught at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Massachusetts.

He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and the Valley of Bloomsburg American Legion, Post 273. He served with the U. S. Army for four years and was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are a sister, Martha Kruczek, Gilbert, Arizona; a nephew, Mark Kruczek, and his wife Nadine, Bloomsburg; and two nieces:  Carol, wife of Gregg Whitehead, Thousand Oaks, Calif. and Ann, wife of Kevin Hoben, Gilbert, Arizona.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p. m. on Wednesday in St. Columba Catholic Church,. 342 Iron Street, Bloomsburg, by Monsignor Robert E. Lawrence. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.

Viewing will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p. m. at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market  Street, Bloomsburg.
