Michael A. Canty

On September 11, 2025 Michael Alan Canty of East Hillcrest Drive, Bloomsburg, passed away after an almost 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born November 6, 1950 to Blaine and Shirley (Ellis) Canty in Marion, IN. Raised in Horseheads N.Y., Mike graduated from Horseheads High School, and then from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1972 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, where he was also a member of ROTC. He spent 3 years as a Lieutenant in the army, serving primarily in Germany. He retired from the Federal Government after 33 years, having worked for the Navy primarily at the Patuxent Naval Air Station in Lexington Park, MD

On August 26, 2000 he married the love of his life, Lynn (Hinderliter), and they Just celebrated their 25th Anniversary. They retired to Bloomsburg in 2007. Together they enjoyed skiing in the U.S. and Canada, traveling to Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England and the Netherlands.

He was a faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where he served on several committees, including Church Council.

He will be terribly missed by his wife Lynn, step-children Jessica (Dave) Dobyns, of St. Louis, MO, Johnathan Smith, of Conowingo, MD, and Tracey Thompson of Lexington Park, MD. He is also survived by his sister Kathy (Donald) Mason , of Weybridge, VT, and Grandchildren: Chad (Salena) and Jason Carley, David Thompson, Abigail, Madeleine and Connor Teska, Dayton Smith, two Great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Father-in-law, and grandson Nathan.

The family wants to thank the wonderful Compass and Compassus teams who assisted Mike during his illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time. Memorials may be made in Mike’s name to St. Matthew Lutheran Church: 123 N. Market Street, Bloomsburg, PA 17815
