Judy R. (Gray) Wright, age 79, of Cherry Hill Road, Bloomsburg died peacefully at her home Tuesday morning, February 13, 2024, after an illness and under the care of Commonwealth Hospice of Berwick.
Born in Toledo, Ohio on August 27, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Elwood L. and Julia M. (Richardson) Gray. She resided in Bloomsburg since 1977.
Judy was a graduate of Libby High School, Toledo, Ohio, Class of 1962. She received her B. S. degree from Mary Manse College in Toledo in 1968 and later earned her Master’s degree in Reading from Bloomsburg University in 1981.
She began her professional career in 1965 as the Head Teacher of the Head Start Program in Toledo. After receiving her teaching degree, she was hired as a teacher in the Glenwood Elementary School, where she worked until 1977.
Judy moved to Bloomsburg in 1977 and became a teacher in the Head Start Program in the Berwick School District. In 1983 she was hired as an Elementary teacher in the Central Columbia School District where she taught for 25 years, retiring in 2008
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg, where she served as an Elder and Deacon. Other community activities included P. E. O. Chapter BK, Circle of Sisters, a Social Club for African American Women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Nostrum Libri Book Club, Columbia/Montour County United Way, and International Year of the Child committee.
Judy served on the Bloomsburg University Alumni Board and was a member of the University Community Task Force on Racial Equity.
In her spare time, Judy enjoyed reading, cooking, and traveling. On Saturdays in the fall you would find her at or watching a Penn State Football game.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Marva Lancaster and Carmen Macklin.
Judy is survived by her husband, Dr. Irvin Wright, with whom she observed their 45th wedding anniversary on May 6, 2023; three children: Thomas Dale Wright and his wife Karen of Selinsgrove, Jolan Wright-McAdoo and her husband Percy McAdoo of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ellwood Leroy Vines of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren: Bradley Lantz, Jalen McAdoo, and Jasmine McAdoo and two great grandchildren, Kendall Nicole Sutton and Kallyah Janyel McAdoo.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024 at 11 a. m. the First Presbyterian Church, 345 Market Street, Bloomsburg with her pastor, Rev. Pamela Meilands and former pastor, Rev. David C. Kingsley officiating. Entombment will follow in Elan Memorial Park at Lime Ridge.
Viewing will be on Sunday, from 3-5 p.m. at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
