John Vincent McCormick

John V. McCormick, M.D., age 77, 26 Vine St., Danville, passed away at 8:45 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at the Columbia Montour Hospice At Maria Hall, Danville. He was a resident of 26 Vine Street, Danville for the 48 years he lived here.

Born in Somerville, Mass. on March 1, 1936, he grew up during World War II in relative poverty, except that he quickly learned to use the opportunities he had to find jobs that enabled him to pursue a fine education. He graduated from the prestigious Boston Latin School; earned a B.S. degree in psychology from Tufts University, where he graduated Magna cum laude; and Tufts Medical School in 1962. His goal in life was to help take care of people.

Dr. McCormick interned at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, New Jersey. In 1963 he was drafted into the US Army Medical Corps and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 1965 he came to Geisinger Medical Center for an internal medicine residency and completed additional training at Yale University, New Haven, Conn. in gastroenterology, which enabled him to develop the Department of Gastroenterology at Geisinger. He retired in 1996 and became the Emeritus Director of Gastroenterology.

After retirement he continued his ties with the hospital by organizing luncheons and breakfast gatherings for the retired physicians. He also volunteered as a teacher to medical students until November, 2013.

Dr. McCormick enjoyed the outdoors, cross country skiing, camping, scuba diving and independent travel with his family. He was a member of the Columbia Montour Amateur Radio Club and square danced with the Danjo Wheelers. He had a strong commitment to his Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Louise M. Veltman; a daughter, Kristina Formica, Denver, Colo.; a son, Randall McCormick, Flushing, New York; and a granddaughter, Samantha Formica, Denver, Colo.
