Helen Louise Dunsford, M.D.
Dr. Helen Louise Lucia Dunsford passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 27th 2021 at 78 years of age. She had a long career breaking gender barriers in the fields of pathology and microbiology. She loved her work as a pathologist, frequently saying that she solved murder mysteries for a living. In her roles as dean of students and as a professor, she trained generations of doctors.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Harold Atkinson Dunsford. She is survived by her brother Ed Lucia, her sons Harold and William, daughters-in-law Jenny and Nancy, grandchildren Edward, Linda and River Fern, and many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
What words can express the wonderful friendship Helen and I experienced over 60 years. We were just teens then, and kept in touch , often writing over the miles and over time spent apart. How I admired her crafts and knowledge of everything. We always had interesting conversations. Her friendship was a true blessing to me. About 2 weeks before she passed I called her from the Amtrak train I was taking to New York. I recalled how much Harold loved trains, and Helen reminded me about my mom walking across Germany with a typewriter and a record player over her shoulders on a belt. We were that close- she knew all about my family, and I knew about her. I want to hold on to the way she spoke, her sneezes, her wonderful laughter and her generous spirit. A true friend that I will miss intensely.
I send my sympathy to her family.
