Harold J. “Jim” Shutt, age 91, of State Street, Danville, passed away Tuesday August 5, 2025 at his home.

Born on May 3, 1934 in Danville, he was the son of the late Raymond and Hazel (Beyer) Shutt. Jim was a 1952 graduate of Danville High School. He obtained a B.A. degree and a M.A. degree from the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College.

Jim was last employed as a business and marketing teacher at Central Columbia High School, retiring in 1993. He previously taught at Columbia-Montour Vocational Technical School. Earlier in his life, he worked at Ray Shutt & Sons, a store and butcher shop in the second ward.

He served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1956-1958.

Jim was a member of several organizations in Danville including, the Masonic Lodge #224, Moose Lodge 1133, Elks Lodge #754 and the Washies Fire Company. 

He served on the Geisinger Hospital Authority for 44 years and was chairman for 25 years. Jim also served on the municipal authority and the water authority.

In addition, he was a former second ward councilman and served on the Halloween parade committee.

Jim was an avid gardener and enjoyed giving away vegetables and homemade sauerkraut to his friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed swimming at the Danville Area Community Center and collecting classic and antique cars. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Shutt, Jr.

Surviving is his wife, the former Jacqueline Hower, with whom he celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on October 3, 2024; three children, Cheryl, wife of Harry Wright, of Catawissa; Karen, wife of Alan Baehr, of Clarkdale, Arizona, and James H. Shutt, and his wife Karen Wong, of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren: Aleah, Brian, Joshua, Jeremy, Brady, Amanda, and Jacintha; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 12, 2025 at 11 a.m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1133 Bloom Rd., Danville, with Chaplain Alan Langelli, of Geisinger Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army and the Honor Guard Post 40 American Legion. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m.
