Eugene C. "Gene" Hurley

Eugene Clarence Hurley, 81, of Danville, passed away at 11:15 p.m., February 15, 2019 at Maria Hall where he was admitted at 1:00 pm, February 14, 2019. Gene had battled with cancer for one year at home, and was cared for by his family who loved him so much.

He was born on October 21, 1937 in Danville, where he spent his entire life. He was the son of  the late Charles W. and Marjorie (Keefer) Hurley.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army, spending three years in Germany. Gene was employed at the Danville State Hospital, working in security for 27 years. Prior to retirement, he held the position as Chief of Security.

Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying hunting trips out West and fishing trips to Canada with his family. He had such a great magnetism for all animals, wild and domestic, rescuing all sorts of wildlife throughout his living years. Gene was a favorite person to all friends and family, especially children, who loved his presence. In his later years, he loved walking his dogs, and feeding wild animals. His weekly bowling day with the Elks bowling team was very important to him. He also enjoyed trips to the casino, antiquing, baking, and cooking holiday meals for the family.

Gene was such a wonderful husband, father, and pappap. His family and dogs were the biggest and most important part of his everyday life.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles A. Hurley; two sisters: Eleanor E. Steffen, and Shirley A. Day.

He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra Beyer, recently celebrating their 61st anniversary on January 11th 2019. Also, his son, Mark Hurley and his wife, Kathleen, Danville; daughter, Roxie Hurley, Bloomsburg; one favorite grandson, Tyler Mark Sebastian Hurley, Danville; brother, Orin Hurley and his wife, Janice, Danville; a sister, Phyllis Kroh and husband Roderick, Danville; his pug, Chloe, and many special nieces and nephews.

There will be no viewing or services at his request.

He was so thankful for the people who visited or called to give their love, while he was with us. If memorials and donations are given, Gene would like the, to be sent to the Animal Resource Center, PO Box 439 Bloomsburg, PA 17815. Especially thanking, Geisinger Home Health and Hospice at Maria Hall.
