Dorothy M. (McHenry) Long, age 93, formerly of 212 Paragon Farm Road, Shickshinny, went to be with her Lord at 6:10 p. m. Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the Bonham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Register, Luzerne County,where she was a patient since March 22, 2017.

Born in Town Hill, Luzerne County on May 10, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Robert C. McHenry and Daisy M. (Cotterman) McHenry Sangrey. She was educated in a  one room school house for eight years  and  was a 1941 graduate of the former Huntington Mills High School. She resided in State College and Florida before returning to Huntington Township, Luzerne County in the 1980’s.

Dottie was a member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church, where she had served  as secretary of the women’s organization and assisted with several activities and fund raisers.

She worked for several organizations earlier in her life, but enjoyed those that involved sewing of any sort. At one time she had a maternity clothes shop in her home, with all being handmade. She also did cross stitch, made doll houses, and any kind of crafts.  Her latest adventure was quilting, belonging to  “The Willing Hands Quilters” since the early 1980’s. It has been said that she made nearly 100 quilts.

Dottie also enjoyed talking to people about the old days when she was young and sang in a group known as “Cactus Kate & Her Yodeling Ramblers”. The group was made up of her brothers and sisters. Her father died at an early age and this helped the family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor L. Long on Feb. 22, 1998; by a son, Duane Long on Oct. 10, 1990; two granddaughters: Tammy Smith on April 13, 1985 and Michelle Mattern on March 28, 2009; two son in laws: James Wasson and Donald Smith; a brother, Richard McHenry; sister in laws: Rose McHenry; Hilda (Long) Yager; Alice (Long) Hunter; and brother in laws: Warner Moss and George Coombs.

Dottie is  survived by two daughters: Dorothy (Long) Smith and Nancy Wasson, Bellefonte; two sons: David Long, and his wife Vickey, State College and Kenneth Long, and his wife Patricia, Shickshinny; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; two sisters: Evelyn Coombs, a guest at Bonham Nursing Center; and  Lois Moss, Town Hill; two brothers: Sheldon McHenry  and Donald McHenry, and his wife Dawn, all of Town Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a. m. in the Town Hill United Methodist Church, 417 Town Hill Road, Shickshinny, with her pastor, Rev. Bethany P. Wood officiating.. Interment will follow in Scott Cemetery, Waterton. Friends may call at the Church on Monday from 10-11 a. m.

The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to the Town Hill United Methodist Church, 417 Town Hill Rd., Shickshinny, PA 18655.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, Benton.
