Donald H. Chapin, age 69, of 25 Register Road, Stillwater, died at 8:41 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, in the emergency room of the Berwick Hospital Center, where he was taken after being stricken at his home.
Born on Jan. 7, 1940, at Town Hill, Huntington Township, Luzerne County, he was the only son of the late Harold Q. and Naomi K. (Westover) Chapin. He resided in Huntington Township his entire life and was a 1959 graduate of Northwest Area High School and a 1961 graduate of the former Williamsport Area Community College.
He was employed as the service manager for Penske Trucking Co. at its White Deer Facility, retiring in 1997. Previously, he was employed by the former LaBar Trucking Co., White Deer.
Don was a member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church; Izaak Walton League, Red Rock; National Rifle Association; and a life member of the North America Fishing Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed hunting with his son, son-in-law and grandsons. Since retiring, he became an expert woodworker, spending time making many beautiful items.
He was preceded in death by his only son, Chad N. Chapin, on Oct. 6, 2006.
Surviving are his wife, the former R. Carol Hartman, with whom he would have celebrated his 46th wedding anniversary on June 8; a daughter, Donnalee C., wife of Brad R. Beach, Fairfax Station, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Tammy D. Chapin, Stillwater; four grandchildren: Travis T. Chapin and Kyle C. Erdley, both of Stillwater; Alyssa D. Beach and Ryan M. Beach, both of Fairfax Station, Va.; a great-grandson, Kamden Erdley, Stillwater; and his stepmother, Ila C. Chapin, Town Hill.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc. Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Benton, with his pastor, the Rev. Mark A. Hagy, officiating. Interment will be in the New Columbus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
