Carolyn E. Derr

Carolyn E. (Melick) Derr, age 93 of Charlotte, North Carolina died in Charlotte on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. She spent most of her life in Bloomsburg before moving to Charlotte to be nearer her children and grandchildren.

Born on February 12, 1928 in Morristown, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late George and Esther (Udall) Melick. She graduated from Morristown High School and went on to graduate from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, where she met her husband Dale in 1949.

Carolyn worked in the insurance industry briefly before dedicating her life to raising her three children. She participated in voluntary activities including the Bloomsburg Hospital Auxiliary. She also became a competitive swimmer and continued doing that into her 80’s.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, for over 60 years and was a member of the choir until moving to Charlotte.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Bloomsburg Attorney, Dale A. Derr, on January 23, 2000 and by her son, Douglas A. Derr, on January 14, 2018.

She is survived by two daughters: Kathryn (Kathy), wife of William Kohler, Lake Frederick, Virginia and Holly, wife of Richard Lunn, Charlotte, North Carolina; and four grandchildren: Megan Kohler, Kevin Kohler and his wife Anna, Amanda Lunn, wife of Marco Sulsenti and Christopher Lunn.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 11 a. m. in Wesley United Methodist Church, W. Third and Market Streets, Bloomsburg, with her pastor, Rev. Mark F. Reisinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Millville Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a. m. Please use the West Third Street entrance.
