Carol Deforest Locke-Endy

Carol Deforest Locke-Endy, 76, died of cancer at her Bloomsburg home at 5 Kent Road on May 23, 2018 while under the devoted care of Geisinger Home Health and Hospice.

            Carol was a graduate of Peterborough High School in New Hampshire and received a B.A and an M. A. in English from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, was a leader in student government, and was elected to the Telluride Association, an academic honor society.  

            She and her then husband, David Locke, were selected to be Peace Corps volunteers from 1964 to 1966, serving primarily as teachers at Universidad de Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil. Carol then worked for nine months as a Peace Corps trainer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

            Higher education administration, with occasional teaching, was Carol’s vocation. She served as assistant to the vice-president for administration at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; assistant to the president and assistant academic dean of students at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York; executive director of the Telluride Association at Cornell University; associate dean of students for academic and social affairs at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York; and director of internships, field studies, and community service at St. Mary’s College of Maryland,  a public liberal arts honors college in St. Mary’s City. She was a strong advocate for liberal arts education and especially for experiential learning that would engage students with the world beyond the campus.

            That commitment resulted in a variety of civic activities in the course of her career and in retirement in Bloomsburg. During her days in Maryland she was active in oral history projects for and community service to the African-American community in St. Mary’s County.  In retirement she worked as a volunteer at Bloomsburg University doing research on community engagement by students. She was active in the Task Force for Racial Equity, recommending and heading up its annual Martin Luther King community meal and program. She was also active in the Task Force’s successor organization, the Coalition for Social Equity, where she worked to encourage interfaith fellowship and understanding.

            Carol was active in the Religious Society of Friends throughout much of her adult years and was most recently a member of the Millville Friends Meeting.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin Endy of Bloomsburg; sons Nathaniel Locke and his wife Tina, and Benjamin Locke and his wife Deanna; step-son Michael Endy and his wife Anne; step-daughter Margaret Endy and her husband John Tarango;  grandchildren Ethan, Brendan, and Anya Locke and Melissa and Grace Endy;  her mother Claire Moore; and her brother MacDonald Moore and his wife Deborah.

A memorial service and reception will take place at the Millville Friends Meeting in Millville on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 2 p.m.
