Andrew M. "Andy" Hergan

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Andrew M. “Andy” Hergan, III, age 69, of Bloomsburg, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, while vacationing in Sarasota, Florida.

Born on Feb. 9, 1955 in Kingston, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (DiPietro) Hergan. He was raised in Wyoming, PA. He was a 1973 graduate of Wyoming Area High School where he led the baseball and football teams as pitcher and quarterback and was later inducted into the Wyoming Area Ring of Pride for his talent and where he remained a proud and active alumnus.

Andy continued his academic and athletic career at Bloomsburg University where he majored in Special Education with a minor in Delta Pi Fraternity social life before graduating in 1977. With his strong work ethic, intelligence, and athleticism he obtained his Masters Degree in Special Education.  He played on both the baseball and football teams at Bloomsburg University.

He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg and the Loyal Order of Moose in West Pittston. He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan.

Andy married his high school sweetheart and life long best friend, Lucy Ann Balzano, on August 14, 1976 and together they established roots in the Bloomsburg area. He honed his innate gift for seeing the greatest potential in people and supporting others as a coach, educator, and mentor to many. The largest benefactors of his gifts and big heart were his wife and children.

He was employed as a Transition Consultant by Intermediate Unit 16 for 35 years, retiring in 2012. He dedicated his time at the I. U. to creating a system to ensure that students and their families were set up for success as they journeyed into adult life. He also served as an adjunct professor at Bloomsburg University.  He and his brother Jimmy grew their muscles and community by creating and operating Hergan’s Gym in Bloomsburg from 1983 to 1994.

Andy retired in 2012 to accept his most cherished position as “Pa: to his seven grandchildren: D. J., Luciana and Sebastian Papcsy; Louis and Angelo Grandizio; and Drew and Lily Hergan. He spent his best days rocking them while listening to music of the 60’s and 70’s, watching Frosty the Snowman and quietly trying to instill his love for the Eagles and Phillies in their little ears.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife of 47 years are three children: Angela, wife of Donald Papcsy of Newtown, Conn., Gina, wife of Chris Grandizio, D. O. of Lewisburg and Andrew M. Hergan and his wife Laura of Bloomsburg; seven grandchildren; a brother, James Hergan and his wife Lisa of Florida; a sister, Graceann, wife of Jay Platukus of Plains and a number of nieces and nephews.
