Gordon E. Bitler, age 94, 193 Magargle Road, Danville, died at 9:25 a. m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient since Friday.
Born in Valley Township, Montour County on May 27, 1923, he was a son of the late Howard R. and Olive V. (Golder) Bitler. He resided in Anthony Township since 1951 and formerly lived in Riverside.
Gordon was a farmer from 1951 to 2000 and earlier he was employed at Kennedy Van Saun, Dean Phipps and by Merck & Co.
Gordon served with the US Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He participated in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, the former Cathren M. Seebold, on August 19, 2007; by a daughter Linda; a great grandaughter, Audra Ebo; two sisters: Margaret Bitler and Daisy G. Carr; and three brothers: Raymond Bitler; Floyd Bitler and Robert Bitler.
Surviving are a son, Gordon C. Bitler, and his wife Linda, Berwick; a daughter in law: Dr. Joy A. Bitler, Irmo, South Carolina; two granddaughters: Michelle D., wife of Rev. Steven Kindt, New Holland and Melanie J., wife of Timothy Ebo, Hopkins, South Carolina; 9 great grandchildren; and a sister, Romayne M. Swisher, Montgomery.
Gordon was always appreciative of the care given to him and his wife by their caregivers, Kathleen Simmons and Kathy Whitenight.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a. m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1133 Bloom Road, Danville, with his grandson in law Rev. Steven Kindt officiating. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery with military honors by the honor guard of American Legion Post 40. Friends may call from 10 m to 11 a. m.
