Daniel P. "Danny" Wood, Jr.March 6, 1922 ~ August 16, 2017 (age 95)
Daniel P. “Danny” Wood, Jr., age 95, formerly of Fernville, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Mountaintop Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center In Mountaintop where he resided since November 2016.
Born in Rupert on March 6, 1922, he was the son of the late Daniel P., and Margaret (Poust) Wood He was a 1940 graduate of Bloomsburg High School.
Danny enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps on November 3, 1942. He achieved the rank of Sergeant while serving during World War II and was discharged on February 28, 1946.
He was the owner and operator of Danny’s Diaper Service for 47 years, retiring at the age of 72 in 1994. Danny was devoted to his customers and took only a one week vacation when his son David was born in 1970. One of his last customers was his grandson, Daniel P. Wood, IV.
Danny was a life member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436; Columbia Valley Moose Lodge 623; Valley of Bloomsburg, American Legion Post 273 for 44 years; and the Bloomsburg Ambulance Association. He was a Little League coach during the 1950’s
and 1960’s. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg, for over 50 years.
He served as an advisor to the Explorer Post 21, Boy Scouts of America, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He and the Boy Scouts continued the efforts of Mr. & Mrs. George Welliver who founded the Bloomsburg Recycling Center at the railroad station at Market and Sixth Streets.
Danny was a sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees and Bloomsburg High School football, where his son David played and currently coaches.
He was married for 39 years to the late Jean (Wintersteen) Wood, who preceded him in death on November 22, 1986.
Danny is survived by three children: Daniel P. Wood, III, and his wife Dorothy (Bell) of Brownsville; Susan R. (Wood), wife of Charles Hutsell of Bradenton, Florida; David S. Wood, and his wife Kristina (Jackman), Danville; his long time companion, Norma Jenkins; seven grandchildren: Shaun Hummer, and his wife Tara; Shelby (Hummer) Kopp; Daniel P. Wood, IV and Gabby Batovsky; Jenny Jones; Audreya Stetar, and her husband Frank; Demir and Amira Wood; and seven great grandchildren: Kole Hummer, Karson Hummer, Kinsley Hummer, Lucas Kopp, Stasio Stetar, Alek Stetar and Daniel P. Wood, V, born on July 17, 2017.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services on Monday at 2 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders officiating. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy, with military honors by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 40 of Danville.
